How Paycheck Taxes Work

Federal income tax is withheld from each paycheck based on the W-4 you filed with your employer. The amount depends on your filing status, income level, and any adjustments. This calculator estimates withholding by computing your annual tax liability and dividing by the number of pay periods.

Social Security (OASDI): 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 for 2026. Once you hit the wage base, Social Security withholding stops for the rest of the year.

Medicare: 1.45% on all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). Unlike Social Security, there is no wage cap for Medicare.

State income tax varies by state. Nine states (AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY) have no state income tax on wages. Others range from flat rates to progressive systems.

Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income, increasing your take-home pay. Enter these to get a more accurate estimate.
